The Present Future

· 4 min read

As a child I watched Elroy Jetson with a certain bemusement, flitting about in his jet pack, popping food pills, and relying on Rosy the Robot to keep his room clean. Likewise in Disney World's Tomorrowland I gazed in amazement at what was once envisione d for our future. Monorails and jet packs were just the optimistic incarnations of that Cold war futurism — but in science fiction particularly we find the more sinister predictions. Luminaries such as Bradbury, Roddenberry, and Gibson penned tales of continuing exploitation of all that humanity might invent. While their tales were scoffed at or ignored by the masses, especially when the Cold War ended with fall-out-free winters, the days of past present may be returning to the present future.

Settling into St. Paul

· One min read

We're now 85% unpacked, though the place is still a mess. Just got library cards and using a public library Internet Station for the first time ever, very exciting you know. So if anyone's reading, other than the viagra and cialis spam-bots (they flood old blog entries with spurious spam comments), drop me a line and say hello. My Austin mobile number is still good. If you don't have it, send me an e-mail. Oh, and the weather has been gorgeous =).

WindowsXP Service Pack 2 Warning

· 5 min read

In the next day or two Microsoft will come out with its long-heralded, major updates to WindowsXP, known as Security Pack 2. The updates for SP2 take care of usability, default settings, and security bugs/holes. A new security pack from Microsoft is always a major step forward… but in my experience always comes with a few bugs itself.

Worst Reason to Ban Gay Marriages

· One min read

"When you look at marriage, it's between a man and a woman," Ms. Goldford said. "Biblically, homosexuality isn't in the plan." (today's New York Times). I'm sorry Ms. Goldford, but we do not live in a theocracy. Please base your vote on secular arguments. Unfortunately I'm too late for my elementary-years-state-of-residence: Missouri voters have approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between a man and a woman. And probably based mostly on the simple religious truism above.

Destruction of Baha'i Holy Sites

· 3 min read

The persecution of the Bahá'ís of Iran continues: recent months have seen the wanton destruction of two holy sites in Iran. In April, it was learned that the grave of Quddús had been secretly razed over a period of several nights, despite local protests against the government's actions. This weekend the sudden destruction of the house of Mírzá Buzurg-i-Núrí in Tehran was brought to light. It is unknown (to me) how many holy places are left in Iran and Iraq; these were undoubtedly two of the most historical.

The Cure Update

· 2 min read

I'm happy to say that there are still plenty of other Cure fans out there. They debuted at #7 in the US and are still #23 on Billboard Hot 100 Albums. I heard them on 101x yesterday (Austin alternative) and they're in the top 20 rotation there. They were debuted at #1 in Mexico, oddly enough, and had good debuts across Europe and in Argentina. But sadly they have not announced any new dates for the Curiosa Festival with Interpol, Mogwai, and others, so I will have to remain detached&hellip .

Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot"

· 3 min read

"The Chief idea of the novel is to portray the positively good man." This object Dostoyevsky has achieved in his 1869 novel The Idiot. It is the story of an invalid, sheltered in childhood, entering high society for the first time. His innocence leads him through fantasy, love, hatred, wealth, jealousy, and all the other attributes of earthly life--especially that life of the elite.

Revisiting the Defense of Marriage

· 6 min read

As a matter of religious conviction —and standard English language definition (this definition has shifted since the post was originally written) — I have never felt that the term "gay marriage" meant much of anything, and would, perhaps, even call it an oxymoron. When the government, however, tries to step in and reinforce that definition with legal statutes, I immediately react against it as an unwarranted and discriminatory encroachment upon civil rights.

Defense of Marriage Act Debate Began Today

· 3 min read

I understand that this is, for many, a large and complex issue that deserves real thought and consideration. I welcome the debate in the Senate, and trust that this august body will realize that a "marriage amendment" is not in keeping with the spirit and text of the Constitution of the United States—the most powerful secular document ever conceived. I acknowledge that there are instances where the federal government must act to protect the public safety and in doing so, moral questions do at times come up. Nevertheless, I cannot see that the banning of "gay marriages" is a matter for federal jurisdiction or concern; I cannot see that it is a matter of such overwhelming importance to the continued functioning of our society that it should be enshrined in our Constitution.

InterfaithNews.Net July Update

· 4 min read

It has been several months since an InterfaithNews.Net update has been sent out, for which we apologize; your intrepid editor is preparing to move to St. Paul, Minnesota (USA) next month.

As many in the audience already know, Barcelona, Spain will play host to the 2004 Parliament of the World's Religions beginning today (June 7). Please send in your comments afterwards—essays, reviews, critiques, and praise—and we will work to compile them for the benefit of those of us who cannot attend this year's festivities.

As the last update was written in April, the site now contains news from My, June, and this first week of July, as well as three new polls about the site's functioning. So please stop by, enjoy, and vote.
